Reformer Pilates in Penshurst: a gentle beginner’s guide

Reformer Pilates class at Inspired, Penshurst

If you’ve been curious about reformer Pilates but haven’t walked in yet, this is for you. Here’s what starting actually looks like — no jargon, no pressure.

A lot of people picture a reformer studio as intimidating — rows of machines, everyone who clearly knows what they’re doing, and you at the back trying to keep up. We hear this all the time. It’s honestly not like that here, and it doesn’t have to be like that anywhere you choose to start.

What reformer Pilates actually is

The reformer is a bed on springs. You lie, sit, kneel or stand on it and move slowly against gentle spring resistance. That’s it. The springs make the work adjustable, so the same exercise can be gentle or challenging depending on what your body needs that day. It’s low-impact and kind to your joints, which is a big part of why people of every age and stage keep coming back.

What your first class is really like

You arrive a few minutes before class, say hello, and let the instructor know if anything’s bothering you — a sore knee, a tight back, whatever it is. Because our classes are capped at eight, your instructor can keep a proper eye on you and adjust as you go. You’re never just a number, and you’re never left behind.

You don’t need an intro session before you join. You can start straight in a class, at your own pace, with plenty of options to make each movement easier or harder.

How often to come

Two or three classes a week is the sweet spot. That’s enough to feel stronger and steadier without taking over your week. Most people notice they feel good — calmer, a bit taller, sleeping better — before they see any change at all. That feeling is the point.
