Pilates after having a baby: when it’s safe to start, and how we help

Postnatal support at Inspired, Penshurst

Coming back to movement after a baby is a big deal — and it should be gentle, supported, and completely judgment-free. Here’s how we approach it.

Pregnancy and early motherhood ask an enormous amount of your body. When you’re ready to move again, the goal isn’t to bounce back to anything — it’s to rebuild strength gently, in a way that feels good and fits around a very full life.

While you’re pregnant

Our reformer-based pre and postnatal classes help you stay strong and steady, with plenty of support and modifications along the way. We keep the classes small so your instructor can watch how you’re going and adjust as your body changes. Most people join us from early in the second trimester — always check with your doctor or midwife first.

After baby arrives

When you’re ready to come back, we’re here. Postnatal classes rebuild strength gently, with a real focus on your pelvic floor and core, alongside other new mums who genuinely get it. Most people start from around six weeks after birth, a little longer after a caesarean, once their doctor has cleared them.

Bringing bubs along

If you’d rather not be apart from your little one, our Mums & Bubs classes let you move with your baby right there. Gentle mat Pilates or yoga, with all the room in the world to stop and tend to bubs whenever you need — that’s the whole point. There’s pram parking upstairs and a lounge to feed or change, and first-timers get a free pair of matching mum-and-baby grippy socks.

The honest bit

You do not need to be fit, or experienced, or anything in particular to come. This is a warm, unpretentious space, and plenty of the people beside you are feeling exactly the way you are. Come as you are — we’ll look after the rest.
