You’ve decided to try Pilates, then the timetable gives you another decision: Mat or Reformer? Both are options for beginners at Inspired. The useful difference is how you’ll move in each class.
What happens in Reformer Pilates?
A reformer is a piece of Pilates equipment with a moving carriage, springs and straps. In class, your instructor guides you through controlled movements using that equipment. The springs are part of the setup, and your teacher helps you understand how to use them.
You don’t need to learn the machine before arriving. At our Penshurst studio, reformer classes are capped at eight and beginners can join without a separate introductory session. Let the instructor know it’s your first time.
What happens in Mat Pilates?
Mat Pilates takes the work onto a mat, with an emphasis on controlled movement, core strength and posture. You follow the instructor without using a reformer bed.
It may be the more familiar-looking option if you’ve seen Pilates online, but less equipment doesn’t automatically mean an easier class. The pace, exercises and options your teacher gives you all shape the experience. Our Mat Pilates classes take place upstairs.
Choose by curiosity, then check the timetable
If you’re interested in learning how the equipment works, try Reformer. If you’d prefer to begin on a mat, try Mat Pilates. You don’t have to complete one before starting the other, and choosing a first class doesn’t mean choosing your only class.
Practical details matter too. Look at the current timetable and choose a session you can get to comfortably. If you’re unsure about the stairs, getting onto equipment or another access requirement, contact us before booking so we can discuss the setup.
What should you bring?
For Reformer, bring a towel and clean grip socks. We sell grip socks if you need a pair. For Mat Pilates, bring your own mat and a towel, and wear comfortable clothes you can move in.
You don’t need special activewear or previous Pilates experience. A willingness to listen, ask questions and learn the movements is a perfectly good starting point.
You can try both before deciding
